November 19th is International Men’s Day—a day to reflect on the vital role men play in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for all.
Established in 1999 with six core objectives, International Men’s Day centers on celebrating positive role models, recognizing men’s positive contributions to society, and promoting awareness of men’s mental health and well-being. The day ultimately emphasizes the importance of creating a safer world through the promotion of gender equality.
While it might seem unconventional to center men in DEI conversations, their involvement is essential, both as allies and as stakeholders. This year’s theme, “Positive Male Role Models” encourages us to celebrate the men using their power, privilege, and voice to affect positive change.
The Power of Allyship: Male Role Models
Men play a crucial role in advancing DEI by modeling inclusive behaviors, embracing vulnerability, and challenging stereotypes. Through allyship, they foster respect, empathy, and fairness, encouraging others—particularly younger generations—to do the same, ultimately shaping a more equitable society.
Through leading by example at work, at home, and in their communities, these role models break down harmful stereotypes and redefine leadership. Their influence not only empowers individuals but also sets a standard for a collaborative and inclusive future.
Men’s Issues – The Fight for Vulnerability
While men play a key role in supporting DEI, it is equally important to address challenges unique to them. Societal and cultural expectations often pressure men to conform to traditional notions of masculinity, leading to dire mental health outcomes.
Although progress has been made in recent years to support men’s mental health, many are still struggling. For example, men account for nearly 75% of all deaths caused by suicide in Canada, and those who identify as racialized or as members of the LGBTQ+ community face significantly higher risks for depression and anxiety. Recognizing and addressing these issues benefits not only men but everyone in their lives.
To all the positive male role models in our workplaces, and in our world – Happy International Men’s Day. We appreciate you.
