Sharon Cheung

Sharon Cheung currently heads up the government affairs team at ALPA Canada where she advocates for safer working conditions on behalf of its 21 pilot groups.

Previously, she held several leadership roles with the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA), most recently as Director of Marketing and Communications. At COPA, Sharon launched Canada’s first national learning portal tailored to the evolving needs of private pilots, engaged a network of over 200 chapters with advocacy resources, and earned recognition as one of Aviation’s Top 40 Under 40 by Wings and Helicopter Magazine.

She is the Founding Chair of the Transport Canada General Aviation Pilot Engagement Working Group and serves as an Advising Member of an ICAO Personnel Training and Licensing Working Group, which focuses on improving recruitment and retention for underrepresented groups in aviation. Sharon has also played a pivotal role in reshaping the public perception of General Aviation in Canada, earning Canada’s largest flying community the 2023 Altitude Award from the Black Aviation Professionals Network for her dedicated allyship work.

She was instrumental in launching Canada’s first national RPAS SMS with the Aerial Evolution Association of Canada. This system is used today to increase the safety of drone flight operations across the country by supporting the investigation and prevention of occurrences.

Before her tenure at COPA, Sharon managed stakeholder relations initiatives at NAV CANADA which includes public consultations on aircraft noise issues, advanced ANSP technologies, and communicating changes in service levels with both government and industry. Sharon was recognized with a NAV CANADA President’s Award for her contributions in introducing the new ICAO-established RNP AR standard at CYYC, which received international acclaim.

A passionate advocate for the industry, Sharon recently established the Aviation Barriers Study Committee to explore the factors that prevent women, BIPOC individuals, and other underrepresented groups from entering and staying in aviation. This initiative, with support from the Waterloo Institute of Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) and the Canadian Advanced Air Mobility (CAAM) association, is set to release an industry white paper by the end of the year. In addition to these roles, Sharon is an active member of her local 99s chapter and Elevate Aviation.
